Bakuchiol (babchi oil) is antioxidant present in the leaves and seeds of the Babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia). It is also present in other plant sources including Psoralea grandulosa, Cherry Riceflower (Pimelea drupaceae), Father David elm (Ulmus davidiana), long pepper (Piper longum) and Otholobium pubescens. Bakuchi oil has been used in Chinese and Indian medicine since ancient times.

Bakuchiol is present in the maximum permitted concentration in our 2% Bakuchiol Oil Serum, for optimal anti-aging results.
Babchi oil is a natural, gentler alternative to retinol. It is used to treat fine lines, acne and dark spots. It stimulates collagen synthesis, improves skin elasticity and firmness.
It works through the same receptors as retinol, which is why many refer to it as a natural alternative to retinol. Bakuchiol appears to target several cellural pathways similar to those targeted by retinoids, including modulation of retinoic acid receptors genes and upregulation of collagen and extracellular matrix synthesis enzymes.
Unlike retinol, it does not cause tightening, peeling of the skin and dermatitis. Bakuchiol can be used by pregnant women, nursing mothers and people planning a pregnancy, as well as people with sensitive skin – dermatitis and psoriasis. Bakuchiol is not phototoxic and can also be used in daily skin care.
A small study published in February 2019. in British Journal of Dermatology demonstrated that bakuchiol is comparable to retinol in its ability to improve photoaging and is better tolerated than retinol. This was a randomized, double-blind, 12 week study in which 44 subjects were asked to apply either 0.5 % bakuchiol cream twice daily or 0.5 % retinol cream daily. A facial photograph and analysis system was used to obtain and analyze high-resolution photographs of subjects at 0, 4, 8, 12 weeks. Results of the study showed that bakuchiol and retinol both significantly decreased wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation with no statistical difference between the compunds. The retinol users reported more facial skin scaling and stinging.
The clinical study published in 2014. in International Journal of Cosmetic Science shows that bakuchiol has great anti-aging benefits. 17 healthy but photoaged subjects were recruited to blind study (all females, age range 40-65). Subjects were instructed to apply cream containing 0.5% bakuchiol for 12 weeks. Clinical assessments of the skin of the face were performed for all participants at baseline and following 4, 8 and 12 weeks of product use. The following parameters were assesed at each visit by an expert grader: fine lines/wrinkles, roughness and dryness, skin tone, skin elasticity and firmness, radiance, brightening and eye area appearance. After 8 weeks of daily application a significant reduction in the wrinkle depth and roughness was observed with the 0,5% bakuchiol cream vs. baseline. These changes were even greater after 12 weeks of cream application. Significant improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, elasticity, firmness and overall reduction in signs of photodamage including even toning effects were observed after 12 weeks of treatment as seen on the photo bellow.

In conlusion babchi oil is promising new alternative to retinol. It can be used for treating fine lines, hyperpigmentation, restoring skin suppleness and firmness. It has been reported that bakuchiol also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, cytotoxic and heptaprotecive effects.
